Beijing, China – Volkswagen made a bold statement at the 2024 Auto China show, unveiling the ID. Code concept car and outlining a future heavily invested in electric vehicles (EVs) for the Chinese market.
The ID. Code, a large electric SUV with a sleek, futuristic design, offers a glimpse into Volkswagen’s upcoming design language and technologies tailored specifically for China. The concept boasts a unique exterior that can function as a display for advanced light projections and augmented reality systems.
But the ID. Code is just the beginning. By 2 2030, Volkswagen plans to have 16 ID-badged electric vehicles on sale in China. This includes five vehicles from the new ID. UX lifestyle sub-brand, targeting younger buyers with models like the forthcoming ID. UX. The company will also introduce electric versions of existing models and launch new plug-in hybrids with over 100 kilometers of electric range.
To achieve this ambitious plan, Volkswagen is accelerating its research and development efforts in China. By year’s end, their Eno tech center will house 3,000 engineers working on EVs, self-driving systems, connectivity features, and more. The brand is also partnering with local tech companies like Horizon Robotics and developing a new electric vehicle platform specifically for China called the CMP (China Main Platform).
Volkswagen’s commitment to the Chinese EV market is clear. With the alluring design direction previewed by the ID. Code, significant investments in product development, technology, and local manufacturing, Volkswagen is positioning itself as a major player in China’s electric future. They are transitioning from a leader in gasoline-powered cars to a potential leader in the coming EV revolution.
