Rivian, the innovative electric vehicle manufacturer, is gearing up to expand its lineup with the introduction of the R1X, a robust addition to its already impressive R1 series. The R1X is expected to be a more rugged and powerful version of the R1T and R1S models, boasting enhancements that promise to elevate its off-road capabilities to new heights.
The anticipation for the R1X builds upon Rivian’s recent announcements of future models such as the R2, R3, and R3X. However, it’s the R1X that’s poised to make its debut ahead of the pack. A recent trademark filing hints at the development of a tougher R1 variant, potentially named R1 TX or R1 SX. While the final naming convention remains uncertain, the essence of the “X” series, as seen in the R3X, is expected to translate into the R1 range, signifying a leap in performance and durability.
A patent filing has revealed a glimpse of what the R1X might entail: an aggressive front fascia, sturdy rock sliders, and a beefier bumper designed to enhance the vehicle’s approach angle. These features, coupled with robust tires, suggest a vehicle ready to conquer challenging terrains. The R3X’s debut showcased distinctive orange accents and a teal exterior, elements that could very well adorn the R1X, though additional color options are likely.
Under the hood, the R1X is rumored to pack a formidable punch. While the current R1S SUV and R1T pickup offer dual and quad-motor configurations, the R1X could potentially exceed the 835 horsepower mark, with whispers of a performance variant surpassing 1,000 horsepower. This powertrain would not only ensure blistering acceleration but also provide the precision and control necessary for off-road adventures.
The R1X’s off-road package is expected to include a suite of enhancements: a raised suspension for greater ground clearance, larger wheels shod in aggressive tires, and reinforced body cladding to protect against the elements. These upgrades aim to improve upon the R1T’s already respectable approach and departure angles, as well as its water fording capabilities.
As for pricing, the R1X is anticipated to command a premium over the current R1T, which starts at approximately $72,000. With high-performance electric vehicles like the GMC Hummer EV and Tesla Cybertruck reaching upwards of $100,000, the R1X’s price point is predicted to align with market expectations for a vehicle of its caliber, potentially starting around $115,000.
While Rivian has yet to announce an official release date for the R1X, industry insiders speculate that it could arrive sooner rather than later, possibly within this year. The introduction of an X variant to the R1 series would strategically coincide with the growing demand for high-performance, off-road-capable electric vehicles. If rumors hold true, we might see a 1,000 horsepower R1X model making its grand entrance in 2024
