BYD has added another electric vehicle to its lineup, the Seal X hatchback, which was declared by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on May 11th. This new model joins the existing Seal family, which includes the Seal 6, Seal EV, Seal DMI, and Seal DM-i.
Confusing Nomenclature: The Seal X has had multiple names associated with it, including the Seal 06 GT, Seal mini, Seal 05 EV, and B-Seal. Previously, it was known as the Ocean-M concept car.
Potential for International Success: While the electric sedan version of the Seal hasn’t performed well in China due to market saturation, the Seal X hatchback is expected to be more popular. It has dimensions similar to the Tesla Model Y, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase and a 200 km/h top speed.
Powertrain Options: The Seal X will come in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The single motor model offers 160 kW, while the dual motor reaches 310 kW. BYD’s signature lithium iron phosphate Blade batteries will power the vehicle.
Global Expansion: Rumors suggest BYD plans a significant launch into Europe and other markets outside of China over the next five years. This could lead to more BYD models and potentially lower prices for consumers.

Battery Packs: The Seal X is expected to utilize the same battery packs as the current BYD Seal. This includes an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack for the longer-range version and a 60 kWh option similar to the BYD Han.
Overall, the BYD Seal X adds another option to the company’s growing electric vehicle lineup. With its hatchback design and potential for international release, the Seal X could be a strong contender in the global electric car market.
