San Diego, CA – In a landmark moment for environmental progress, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Bali Express, a San Diego-based freight company, collaborated to achieve the first-ever cross-border journey of a Class 8 heavy-duty electric semi-truck. This historic event marks a significant step towards a cleaner future for both the United States and Mexico.
A Pioneering Journey
The inaugural trip involved a Peterbilt 579EV, one of eleven recently acquired by Bali Express, carrying cargo through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, a vital connection between Southern California and Tijuana. This successful crossing demonstrates the practicality of electric freight transportation and the power of collaboration between private companies and public utilities.
Building a Sustainable Future
Bali Express, equipped with cutting-edge charging infrastructure supported by SDG&E, aims to revolutionize the industry by providing reliable and affordable electric options for medium and heavy-duty vehicles crossing the border. Additionally, grant funding from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program facilitated the strategic placement of charging stations along the route.
Leaders Applaud Collaborative Efforts
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria praised the event, highlighting its significance for environmental protection and cross-border cooperation. “We’re not just reducing emissions,” stated Mayor Gloria, “we’re building a cleaner future for our border communities while leading the way in international trade and environmental responsibility.”
Collaboration Drives Innovation
SDG&E’s Executive Director, Caroline Winn, emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving innovation. “The inauguration of this new charging corridor is a prime example of how collaboration can create new and innovative ways to rethink how transportation systems can move toward electrification,” Winn remarked.
Powerful and Efficient
The Peterbilt 579EV trucks boast impressive capabilities. They possess a GCWR of 82,000 lbs and utilize the robust 670-horsepower Meritor 14Xe epowertrain, ensuring efficiency and reliability. These electric giants offer a range of approximately 150 miles and can recharge their 400 kWh batteries in just 3 hours.
A Beacon of Hope
This historic achievement serves as a beacon of hope for a sustainable future. The combined efforts of SDG&E, Bali Express, and other stakeholders pave the way for a transportation sector that prioritizes both economic prosperity and environmental responsibility. This pioneering journey signifies a commitment to a greener and more equitable world.
