Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) today announced a significant surge in global electric vehicle (EV) retail sales for April 2024. The company sold over 17,140 EVs, representing nearly 7% of its total vehicle sales for the month.
This news comes despite a slight decrease (0.6%) in Kia’s overall global vehicle sales when compared to April 2023. However, the strong performance in the EV segment highlights Kia’s commitment to electric mobility and growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly vehicles.
Kia Expects Continued EV Growth
Kia attributes the rise in EV sales to its diverse lineup, including the EV6, EV3, EV5, EV9, Niro EV, Niro Plus EV, and Soul EV. The company anticipates maintaining this momentum with the launch of the all-new EV3 and an updated EV6 model in the second half of 2024.
Sales Breakdown and Future Outlook
Kia’s retail EV sales for the first four months of 2024 have surpassed 61,000 units, reflecting an estimated growth rate of over 70% year-over-year. While wholesale shipments of Kia’s E-GMP platform-based models (EV3, EV6, and EV9) saw a slight decline (6%) compared to April 2023, the year-to-date total remains impressive at over 44,000 units.
Here’s a breakdown of Kia’s year-to-date wholesale BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) sales:
- EV3: 3 (new model)
- EV5: 2,433 (new)
- EV6: 29,035 (down 20%)
- EV9: 13,141 (new)
Kia’s best-selling EV remains the EV6, though sales figures (5,728 units) reflect a year-over-year decrease of 39%. The company anticipates a rebound once the updated EV6 model hits the market.
