Leipzig, Germany – Porsche AG has officially commenced production of the Macan EV at its expanded factory in Leipzig, Germany. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it ramps up its electric vehicle (EV) production capacity.
Investment and Expansion
The German automaker invested a substantial $650 million to expand the Leipzig plant and equip it for Macan EV production. This expansion also aligns with Porsche’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality throughout its entire production chain by 2030.
Macan EV Joins Production Line-Up
The Macan EV becomes the first all-electric vehicle to roll off the Leipzig assembly line. Previously, the factory focused on combustion engine models like the Macan, Panamera, and (until 2018) the Cayenne and Bentley Continental GT.
Ambitious EV Goals
Porsche aims for electric vehicles to comprise 80% of its total sales by the end of the decade. The company plans to achieve this through continued EV launches, with the next major debut being the fully electric 718. This upcoming model will be available in both Cayman coupe and Boxster convertible variants, offering either single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations.
Macan EV Details
The Porsche Macan EV comes in two variants: the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Both models boast dual-motor all-wheel drive and utilize the same 100 kWh battery pack. The Macan 4 offers 402 horsepower, while the Macan Turbo delivers a powerful 630 horsepower. Both are expected to achieve an EPA-estimated range of around 300 miles. Porsche anticipates introducing even more high-performance variants of the Macan EV in the future.
Shifting Focus and Upcoming Models
Following the launch of its first electric sports car, Porsche plans to shift its focus to developing its largest vehicle ever – a three-row electric SUV positioned above the Cayenne in the lineup. This model is expected to arrive before 2027, according to Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.
Porsche on Electrification
“Porsche is convinced that electromobility is the future,” stated Blume. “It is the joint task of business, politics, and society to drive forward the transformation of mobility together. However, this transformation is not happening everywhere at the same speed. That is why we remain flexible with an attractive product portfolio and with three different powertrains: namely emotional combustion engines, efficient plug-in hybrids, and all-electric models. The Porsche Factory in Leipzig is a pioneer and a flagship as regards flexibility and sustainability.
Ordering and Availability
The Porsche Macan EV is now available for order, with prices starting at $78,400 for the base Macan 4 and $153,000 for the Macan Turbo. However, with additional options, the price can quickly climb above $150,000. First deliveries are anticipated to begin sometime in the latter half of 2024.
