Mountain View, CA – May 6, 2024 – Tesla surprised customers with the introduction of a new Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant of the Model Y in the US. This version replaces the previous standard RWD model and boasts a significant range boost at a lower price point.
More Range, Lower Price
The new Long-Range RWD Model Y starts at $44,990 (plus a $1,640 destination charge), undercutting the retired RWD version by $2,000. This price makes it the most affordable Model Y currently available in the US. Additionally, it qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, bringing the effective cost down to $37,130.
The key selling point of the Long-Range RWD is its increased range. It offers an estimated EPA range of 320 miles, a significant jump compared to the 260 miles of the previous RWD model. This puts it on par with the Long-Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) option in terms of range, but at a $3,000 price advantage.
Performance and Options
The Long-Range RWD boasts a 0-to-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds, slightly faster than the previous RWD version. However, sacrificing rear-wheel drive for the dual-motor AWD system brings the acceleration down to 4.8 seconds in the Long-Range AWD variant, though at a higher cost.
Buyers can choose between 19-inch and 20-inch wheels, with the larger option impacting range slightly. All Model Y versions, including the new Long-Range RWD, can charge at up to 250 kW, adding up to 160 miles of range in 15 minutes.
Upgrade Option for Existing RWD Owners
Interestingly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that some Model Y RWD vehicles produced in the past few months already have the larger battery pack used in the Long-Range version. These owners will be able to unlock the additional range (40-60 miles) through a software update for an estimated cost of $1,500 to $2,000.

Shifting Strategy
The launch of the Long-Range RWD Model Y suggests a potential shift in Tesla’s strategy. It prioritizes affordability and range over the previously offered standard RWD option. This aligns with the current market trends where price and range are key considerations for electric vehicle buyers.
