Xiaomi Aims to Disrupt Electric Car Market with Speedy Production

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant known for its smartphones and smart devices, is making a bold move into the electric car market with its first vehicle, the SU7.

The SU7, an electric full-size sedan, boasts a production speed that Xiaomi hopes will disrupt the market. According to company founder Lei Jun, their “Xiaomi Smart Super Factory” can churn out a new SU7 every 76 seconds, thanks to a combination of 700 robots and a highly automated assembly line.

This rapid production rate is key to Xiaomi’s strategy. The company has invested heavily in electric vehicle development, with plans to become a top-five global automaker. Their Beijing factory boasts an annual capacity of 150,000 units.

The SU7 is priced competitively to take on Tesla’s Model 3, which benefits from local production in China. Xiaomi reportedly received nearly 990,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours of offering the SU7. However, due to high demand, buyers may face wait times of up to 6 months.

For now, Xiaomi is focusing on the Chinese market and has no plans to enter North America with the SU7. This pits them directly against Tesla and BYD, the top-selling electric vehicle maker in China.
